Jetstar Airways, a subsidiary of Qantas Airways, has awarded International Aero Engines (IAE) an order for V2500 engines to power a new fleet of 50 Airbus A320-family aircraft, with the option to purchase V2500 engines for up to 40 more aircraft. The airline also signed a 15-year aftermarket services agreement with IAE covering these new engines, as well as V2500 engines installed on 44 aircraft the three Jetstar airlines currently operate. The value to Pratt & Whitney of the order and aftermarket agreement could exceed $1 billion if all options are exercised. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company and a major participant in IAE.

Auckland International Airport Limited (Auckland Airport) today announced it has agreed to purchase from Westpac Bank a 24.55% stake in North Queensland Airports (NQA), the operator of Cairns and Mackay airports in Queensland, Australia for A$132.8m (approximately NZ $166m).

Today the Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal by the Craigie Trust against a High Court judgment of June 2008, which had ruled in favour of Auckland Airport and held that the Craigie Trust’s claim rightly failed. This decision confirms the view of Auckland Airport that the claim was without merit and the original High Court decision was entirely appropriate. Auckland Airport will defend any appeal to the Supreme Court if such an appeal is filed.

ACI is a global aviation organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, that provides leadership and support to 1,670 airports in 177 countries and territories around the world. Aviation was one of the first industries to globalise and ACI’s member airports together handled 4.9 billion passengers last year representing 96% of the world’s air passengers.

Macquarie Airports (MAp) announced on 24 July 2009 that it had reached agreement with Macquarie Capital (Macquarie) to internalise the management of MAp, subject to MAp security holder approval. On 28 August 2009 it was announced that the proposal would be funded via a 1 for 11 non-renounceable pro-rata entitlement offer to eligible MAp security holders at A$2.30 per stapled security, raising a maximum of A$356m. The payment to Macquarie in return for ending the management rights is A$345 million.

Macquarie Airports (MAp) has reached agreement with Macquarie Capital (Macquarie) to revise the proposal to internalise the management of MAp, announced on 24 July 2009. MAp will still implement the internalisation by acquiring the responsible entity for the two Australian trusts which form part of the MAp stapled security and by ending the advisory agreement with Macquarie Airports Limited, the third component of the MAp structure. However, rather than issuing 150 million new MAp stapled securities to Macquarie, at an issue price of A$2.30 (equivalent to A$345 million), MAp will make a cash payment of A$345 million to Macquarie.

Delta Airlines and Tiger Airways will start flights out of Sydney Airport this Friday. Delta is the world’s largest airline and will commence a service from Sydney to Los Angeles.
Tiger will commence flying on the Sydney-Melbourne route. As well as being Australia’s busiest route, this city pairing is one of the busiest routes in the world with more than seven million passengers flying between the cities last year.

Qantas is secretly contracting foreign pilots while at the same time asking Australian pilots to consider voluntary redundancies, pilots have revealed. Australian pilots have been told by management there is a surplus of jobs, however just last week Qantas engaged foreign pilots and foreign aircraft to do freight runs between Australia and New Zealand.

Sydney Airport has completed the deleveraging announced in February. Sydney Airport's shareholders had decided to invest A$870m to deleverage the company’s capital structure by eliminating the term debt maturing in September and November 2009.
At that time, MAp stated that it expected its contribution to be between A$650m and A$780m. MAp’s final contribution was A$711m increasing MAp’s ownership interest in Sydney Airport to 74.0%.

AIPA President Capt Barry Jackson said the event aboard QF68 was a result of convective turbulence and not an issue with the aircraft, but said pilot skill helped ensure the safety of the passengers onboard.

The beneficial impact of TICkETS, which are predominantly Australian-owned, continues to be incorporated into the calculation of the foreign ownership level. If this impact were to be excluded, MAp’s foreign ownership level would be 41.9%. MAp notes that the market has been advised that TICkETS will be redeemed as at 1 January 2010.
